چکیده
This note reports a correction to the results obtained by [2], in which an error was unfortunately discovered during work with D. Robinson. The problem is in the proof of Lemma 3.10 of this reference, where it is claimed that Lemma 6.5.3 of [1] can be invoked to deduce that ρc k ≥ η2, where ρc k is a specific ratio of achieved to predicted reduction is constraint violation and η2 is a constant in (0, 1). As it turns out, the reasoning is only correct if the ratio ‖sk‖/ ∥ ∥s R k ∥ ∥ is bounded above, where sk is the step at iteration k and s R k is its projection onto the range of the transposed Jacobian J T k . Handling the case where this ratio is unbounded above turned out to be surprisingly complex. In particular, this required considering separately the cases where the tangential component of the step at iteration k is large or small with respect to its normal component, where the meaning of “large” and “small” has to be defined very specifically. The convergence proof taking this distinction into account is therefore significantly more involved than the proof of [2], and cannot be presented in the form of a few corrections in the original text. The report [4] (including substantial contribution by D. Robinson) proposes a corrected version of [2], where other minor

Effects of Probability Function on the Performance of Stochastic Programming
Stochastic programming is a valuable optimization tool where used when some or all of the design parameters of an optimization problem are defined by stochastic variables rather than by deterministic quantities. Depending on the nature of equations involved in the problem, a stochastic optimization problem is called a stochastic linear or nonlinear programming problem. In this paper,a stochasti...
متن کاملNonlinear programming without a penalty function or a filter
A new method is introduced for solving equality constrained nonlinear optimization problems. This method does not use a penalty function, nor a barrier or a filter, and yet can be proved to be globally convergent to first-order stationary points. It uses different trustregions to cope with the nonlinearities of the objective function and the constraints, and allows inexact SQP steps that do not...
متن کاملNonlinear programming without a penalty function
Abstract. In this paper the solution of nonlinear programming problems by a Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) trust-region algorithm is considered. The aim of the present work is to promote global convergence without the need to use a penalty function. Instead, a new concept of a “filter” is introduced which allows a step to be accepted if it reduces either the objective function or the co...
متن کاملIntegrating Goal Programming, Taylor Series, Kuhn-Tucker Conditions, and Penalty Function Approaches to Solve Linear Fractional Bi-level Programming Problems
In this paper, we integrate goal programming (GP), Taylor Series, Kuhn-Tucker conditions and Penalty Function approaches to solve linear fractional bi-level programming (LFBLP)problems. As we know, the Taylor Series is having the property of transforming fractional functions to a polynomial. In the present article by Taylor Series we obtain polynomial objective functions which are equivalent...
متن کاملSuperlinearly convergent exact penalty projected structured Hessian updating schemes for constrained nonlinear least squares: asymptotic analysis
We present a structured algorithm for solving constrained nonlinear least squares problems, and establish its local two-step Q-superlinear convergence. The approach is based on an adaptive structured scheme due to Mahdavi-Amiri and Bartels of the exact penalty method of Coleman and Conn for nonlinearly constrained optimization problems. The structured adaptation also makes use of the ideas of N...
متن کاملA mixed integer nonlinear programming model for optimizing a gas pipeline transmission linear network
The technical equipment developed and used in both installation and operation processes in refineries, oil and gas pipelines, and gas booster stations has always been expensive. Hence, managers at different organizational levels are keen to find methods to control and reduce these costs. Generally speaking, the operators in a gas booster station choose the operating devices without considering ...
